Today, Anna-Lee lives in Geelong with her young family, while teaching music at Geelong Grammar. Despite not being directly involved in music therapy anymore, she admits she continues to draw on those skills to influence her teaching and more recently her performances.
“I strongly believe in the power of music to enhance wellbeing, especially for young people growing up in a world saturated with screens and information. Music, for me, serves as a tool to transport and transcend young minds into a creative space that, in turn, helps them navigate the world.” Anna-Lee says.
Anna-Lee has also ventured back into creating and staging her own shows. Her one-woman cabaret show “After Birth”, now enjoying another season, is coming to Warrnambool in August. Described as a spirited, albeit sleep-deprived, journey through the demanding and blissful early years of parenting; audiences are enjoying Anna-Lee’s sublime vocals, and the laugh-out-loud anecdotes.
When writing the show, Anna-Lee highlights how much the creative process allowed her to recalibrate following the birth of her first child. “By just sitting at the piano, playing, and singing, I was finding my voice again.”
The return to the stage has already drawn her to begin work on another show, this time collaborating with friend and fellow Inspiring Alumni, Gorgi Coghlan. Entitled “Songbirds” the show intends to celebrate their friendship, parenthood, and create an immersive experience through a blend of their musical styles.
“Looking back at my performance career, opening the Sydney season of “Mary Poppins” and participating in a one-off performance of “The Light in the Piazza” stand out. However, the creation of my own work remains the most satisfying and fulfilling.”
