The artefacts and memorabilia contained within the walls of our History Centre continues to grow with thanks to a number of alumni, donating beautiful photos, pieces of uniform and other notable school curios.
These included:
Thanks to Liz Latta, nee Kermond of the Class of 1969 we now have a copy of this beautiful image showing students from Forms IV + V (Years 10 + 11). The performance involved the girls showing garments that they had made at school with a fashion parade, followed by the choral performance shown here.
Another wonderful addition to the collection, the Awards Program, donated by Mark Owen of the Class of 1985, names some memorable athletes including Adrian Gleeson; Inspiring Alumni, Michael Owen and Brendan Keilar; and Emmanuel College staff, Michael Barling, and Mark himself.
Perhaps the most significant heritage news comes with the move of our beloved statue of Mary.
After 35 years watching over Warrnambool, the statue of Mary holding an infant Jesus has been brought down from her position on top of the Rice Campus in preparation for her move to her new home at Emmanuel College’s new Edmund Rice Centre.
Now standing at ground level we are getting close ups of the elegant statue of mother and child. A close inspection reveals that other than a good clean, restoration work will only be required for Mary’s hand.
Originally set in place during the Marian Year (1987-1988), meaning the Year of Mary, the project was initiated by Principal of then CBC Warrnambool, Br John Wright. In among teaching the school community of the values Mary teaches us, he invited students to raise money for the purchase of the statue.
Some may recall, that in the lead up to the statue’s arrival, Br Wright created excitement by taking out a series of ads in the Warrnambool Standard with intriguing headings that read simply, “It is coming!”
Arriving in Warrnambool by train, the statue was greeted at the railway station by the entire student body and staff, festooned with streamers. The College then paraded the statue to St Joseph’s Church to be blessed, before walking it to the College grounds.
