A collection of various school items from across the faculties were uncovered from the Rice Campus. From scientific tools, like this set of scales, to sports memorabilia, like this pennant, to maths classroom equipment, like this blackboard protractor, to this arts tool, a circle drawer.
Perhaps the most exciting donation to the centre was the couple of photo albums that came from past student and staff member, Ian Beattie. The albums bring to life many typical moments of school life during the 1980s, from studying in the classroom, to assembly, to retreat. However the most significant of these are pictures of an event we had only previously been told stories about – the CBC Trike Race. Don’t be fooled by the name, not all vehicles had three wheels! The trike race was a challenge conquered only by teams with engineering savvy, fearless determination and access to spare parts. Each team was allocated a specific number of wheels, a track was mapped out around the school grounds – complete with obstacles. The annual event was set up to raise money for the Missions, and boys would seek sponsorship from their parents and friends.
Pictured in the photos here you can see groups of boys tearing down stairs, wading through the mud pit and generally having a lot of fun.
