2024 marked a big moment for our school community. With the closure of the Canterbury Road campus and the opening of the Edmund Rice Centre, our Year 9 students now have a purpose-built space and for the first time, we’re all together on the one site. It’s a change that not only streamlines our daily life but also reinforces the sense of connection that has always defined us.

That sense of connection is just as strong with our alumni, who continue to give back in meaningful ways. Recently, accomplished journalist, and Deputy Editor at the Warrnambool Standard, Rachael Houlihan (Class of 2008) spoke with our Year 10 Advanced English students, offering insights into the power of storytelling and the realities of a career in media. Meanwhile, Nicola Giblin (Class of 2021), a final-year fashion design student, engaged our senior textiles students in a conversation about creativity, industry trends, and the journey of further study. And of course past College Captain Jacob Gome (Class of 2020) who addressed our Class of 2024 at their graduation last year. Jacob’s continued outstanding academic pursuits have taken him to the other side of the world, working on a research project in synthetic supramolecular chemistry in Switzerland.

Speaking of inspiration, we’re excited to announce our 2025 Inspiring Alumni inductees—a group of outstanding individuals whose achievements reflect the values and ambition of our school. Link here for the full list.

Last but not least, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Shannon Rea (Class of 1993) to Chair of the Emmanuel Alumni Network. Shannon replaces, Ben Walsh (Class of 2005), who we thank for his constant enthusiasm, and overall welcoming approach to developing our alumni program.

From the Chair

“I’ve been very fortunate to have been involved with The Emmanuel Alumni Network for some years now. With every passing year I’ve been able to appreciate with much more awareness what it takes to support the Alumni component of our school.

It takes a collective effort to be part of a great team. To be able to watch and learn from my predecessors who have chaired the board, Kevin Chiller, and Ben Walsh, has made me grateful to have had them pave the way for me to continue in this role. Not least the guidance and support of Candice Hampstead, who shows a passion for Alumni and a knowledge of their paths that is born from a genuine delight in watching Emmanuel students thrive in all the many and varied ways that they do.

I feel strongly that whatever path any member of the Emmanuel Community takes after their time at our school, there’s a connection that can become stronger. During the passage of time that passes upon finishing school, and with the benefit of hindsight, our appreciation for our experience changes and grows, as we recognise those days shape us in ways that we don’t always appreciate fully, when we are younger.

Personally, when I see teachers show genuine interest in wanting to know that the children have gone on and out into the world to find their paths, it’s very heartwarming to know that there lives on an enduring connection, which is part of the beauty of the spirit of this community.“

We look forward to what the next chapter will bring.

Enjoy!
